Wow! It’s Tony Awards time already? How did June arrive so fast?

As Broadway fans prepare for various betting pools at work and parties this Sunday night, picking their favorites and dark horses (I have a soft spot for The Prom), James Corden is working on his opening act and maybe another Broadway Crosswalk Musical for the home viewing audiences? He was one of my favorite hosts in past years; you could tell he was one of us, the kid who wanted to get a look at as many Broadway performances each year on the Tony Awards as possible.

It has been a great season for Broadway, breaking all previous records with the 2018-2019 season grosses. But do you remember last year’s winners? Many of them still contributed to the current season. A wizard and a misplaced band took home the top prizes. A Rodgers & Hammerstein musical was nominated in 11 categories and took home one. A musical on ice was frozen out, and angels’ wings carried many of the play categories.

Hell will probably NOT freeze over as Hadestown, a heavy favorite for Best Musical, should win in several of its 14 nominated categories, and R&H get another shot at Best Revival of a Musical with an edgy new Oklahoma carrying eight nominations this year. The Ferryman should sail away with a few awards, while The Cher Show could very well turn back time for a diva win for Stephanie J Block as Best Actress in a Musical.

A few of the non-performance awards that seem a pretty sure bet are the legendary Bob Mackie for the Costume Design for The Cher Show, and Best Choreography for the revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate.

This is just a scratch at some predictions for the big night. What are yours? Take a look below at the complete list of nominees, and be sure to print out your ballot for Sunday night from the official Tony Awards site where you can read more about the nominees.
