Mr Saturday Night

Billy Crystal is set to star in a musical version of his 90s film Mr Saturday Night, which follows the rise and fall of a comedian, Bobby Young Jr. The new stage show will feature music by Jason Robert Brown, lyrics by Amanda Green, and a book by original screen writers Crystal, Lowell Ganz, and Babaloo Mandel.

The musical is set to open for a developmental run from October 22 to 30 at Barrington Stage Company in the Berkshires. Let’s see if it makes it to Broadway!

Jennifer Nettles heads to Waitress on Broadway

Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles is to take over from Sara Bareilles as Jenna in Waitress from October 19 through November 24. This is a strictly limited engagement with no further announcements on who will take over for the remaining run at the Barrymore Theatre through January 9, 2022.

Nettles has previously appeared on Broadway as Roxie Hart in Chicago, and she played Donna in Mamma Mia! at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017.

Black Theatre Coalition / Broadway Across America Fellowship

Only a couple of weeks remain to apply for the Black Theatre Coalition / Broadway Across America Fellowship. There are 10 paid fellowships available, all of which are part-time over 14 weeks (beginning January 2022). The fellowships offer training in commercial theatre business, including marketing, public relations, finance, operations, ticketing and business intelligence. This round of applications is available for individuals in New York, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Louisville.

Caroline, Or Change

The hotly anticipated Broadway revival of Caroline, or Change finally opens this month at Studio 54. The show stars Sharon D. Clarke as Caroline, a role which won her the 2019 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Check out her incredible performance at the 2019 awards ceremony!

Jagged Little Pill returns to Broadway amid controversy

Jagged Little Pill reopens on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre this month. However, the show will be missing two of its stars after Antonio Cipriano and Celia Rose Gooding recently announced their intentions to leave the production. The show has garnered criticism in recent weeks due to accusations of mistreatment in the workplace and the decision to switch the character of Jo from nonbinary to female. Explaining her decision to leave the cast, Gooding stated that “[I] cannot ignore the harm Jagged has done to the trans and non-binary community.”
