March is Women’s History Month, and throughout the theatre and film industry, women’s achievements are being celebrated. While there have been strides towards gender equity and representation in theatre, there is still work to do. The Actor’s Equity Association has done a study that identifies the “skew” towards white and male for theatre jobs .
Fortunately, there are dynamic groups dedicated to creating opportunities for women artists. The Bridge Initiative, created by Brenda Jean Foley and Tracy Liz Miller, is an incredible non-profit organization that incubates and celebrates professional female theatre artists in the Phoenix area. I Wish I Knew is back this week! A new blog dedicated to interviewing people in the theater and on camera business to get some answers about their journeys through the industry, I thought it would be awesome to interview my casting director friend Cathy Reinking (she/her/hers). As an actor, I’ve spent a lot of my career thinking casting directors were the untouchable, unreadable keepers of the gate to success. They seem scary and intimidating. But then I met Cathy who is one of the most open, nonthreatening casting directors I know. Like a lot of casting directors (seriously!) she is an advocate for artists. Whether you are an actor wanting to know more about what casting directors do, or you want to be a casting director yourself, I think you’ll find Cathy’s interview eye opening.
Art is awesome. I love making art. All I’ve ever wanted to do was tell stories, the kind that help us examine the human experience. That’s what I believe acting to be, particularly in the theatre. Now from a working actor’s perspective, reality has to come into play. You want to do stage work, it’s your passion, but do you remember all the times someone in your past told you that “there’s no money in theatre”? I hate to break it to you, but that person was right. But there’s a way to survive. You can act for a living. But to me, the only way to do it, is by using ALL of the mediums that are out there beyond the stage.
